Our History

West Twyford is home to a well-established, diverse and multicultural community.  It is also home to the oldest residents’ association in the UK!

01

Twyford Abbey

It is a site that has had a Church and Manor House in the grounds since the twelfth century and is of archaeological interest.  The Grade II-listed Twyford Abbey is an early 19th-century Gothic revival mansion designed by William Atkinson. There has been a house on the site of Twyford Abbey since around 1290. It has, at times, been a manor house, a farmhouse and a mansion surrounded by a moat. There was a religious order around 1902 when the Alexian order of monks took it over and began to use it as a rest home for the elderly.

02

Domesday Book

Twyford Abbey has a fascinating history which goes back to the Domesday Book of 1086.  It is why the local community campaigned tirelessly to save it and to preserve the biodiversity that it nurtured.  The beloved Abbey is of historic and cultural interest, reflecting the development of the villages that evolved into modern London.
